The Waste Logistics Centre Pfaffenau

In 2013, vienna completed its last waste management milestone: the waste logistics centre pfaffenau, executed by wku, went into operation.

In this high-tech plant adjoining the waste-to-energy plant Pfaffenau, Vienna's municipal solid waste is processed and distributed to the surrounding thermal treatment plants. The main purpose of the wast logistics centre is to guarantee the safe disposal of Vienna's residual waste in case of waste incineration capacity shortfalls. Here the waste is temporarily stored in foil-wrapped compressed bales. The waste logistics centre comprises a processing plant with pre-storage areas (low-level and flat bunkers) as well as a bale warehouse.

The waste logistics centre has a maximum daily capacity of 1,120 tonnes of waste and an annual capacity of 280,000 tonnes. The bale warehouse holds up to 44,000 foil-wrapped compressed bales, ensuring a safe intermediate storage of Vienna’s residual waste in case of incineration capacity shortfalls.

The purpose of the waste collection centre is to collect municipal solid waste and household hazardous waste. The maximum annual handling capacity amounts to 15,000 tonnes of collected waste.

The plant adjoins the waste-to-energy plant Pfaffenau at Johann-Petrak-Gasse.
